Launching the fifth edition of Chennaiyil
Thiruvaiyaru here on Friday, Union Minister of State
for Information and Broadcasting S. Jagathratchagan
said Lakshman Sruthi had “touched a peak in music in
the last five years” by bringing the Thiruvaiyaru
festival to Chennai. The eight-day event is being
organised by Lakshman Sruthi in association with
Nataka Academy, Rotary Club of Madras Mount and
Kalalaya USA., at Kamarajar Arangam from 9 a.m. to
10 p.m.
On the inaugural day, saint composer Thyagaraja’s
pancharatna kritis were sung. The stage has been
done up to resemble the Thyagaraja aradhanai
mandapam in Thiruvaiyaru. “At a time when youngsters
are drawn to remix and ‘kuthu’ songs Lakshman Sruthi
had brought to them Carnatic music,” said Florence
Pereira, general manager, Administration of
Kalaignar TV.
An exhibition of music albums by various artistes is
also on at the venue. Books, DVDs and CDs on various
