The Thiruvaiyaru Thyagaraja Aradhana festival is
perhaps one of the most celebrated events.
Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru, which is starting today, is
a music festival that seeks to reproduce the magic
of the Thiruvaiyaru event in Chennai. Being held at
the Kamarajar Arangam, this eight-day fiesta
organised by Lakshman Sruthi Musicals, will showcase
leading musicians as well as promising talent.
Speaking at a press conference called to announce
the dates of the festival, singer P Unnikrishnan
said, “There are so many kutcheris during the music
season that the audience get confused at times when
it comes to deciding which ones to attend! However,
this event promises to be a huge draw. It strives to
bring in not only Carnatic music lovers but also
general music lovers.”
In its fifth edition this year, the festival also
promises variety in the form of jugalbandhis. “If
drums and guitar can go global, why can’t the
mridangam,” asked one of the organisers at the
event. Going by the scale of Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru,
it seems it will only be a matter of time before it
does!
