Valayapatti A R Subramaniam

Thavil maestro Valayapatti A R Subramaniam learnt nagaswaram from his father Arumugam before switching over to thavil. His guru was Mannargudi Rajagopala Pillai. The period was dominated by outstanding thavil players. 'I listened tothem and formed my own style,' he used to recall. He had provided accompaniment to great nagaswaram players. However, it was the combination of Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan on the violin and Subramaniam on the thavil that made waves in the music circle. They performed around 3,000 concerts together. He is the first thavil vidwan to receive the Sangita Kalanidhi title.
