Nature has its Seasons — a time to
flower, a time to rain, a time to snow and
so on. If there is a time for Music, it is
the tamil month of Margazhi. It is said to
be the finest month of the year.
• It is the month when Andal's Tiruppavai
is recited.
• Sri Krishna in the celestial song of
Bhagawat Gita says compare himself to
Margazhi: "Among the months, I am Margazhi”
• In Chidambaram Lord Nataraja danced on the
day of Tiruvadirai. This day falls in
Margazhi.
• Saint Manickavasagar sang Tiruvembavai in
Margazhi.
• Devotees go around singing praise of the
Lord Hari in the mornings of Margazhi.
• Front yard of houses are decorated with
colorful Rangoli.
• Temples reverberate with a variety of
Pujas and Festivals.
Add to this the fact that Saint
Thyagaraja's Aradhanai is celebrated in this
very month every year. If you know and heard
of Saint Thyagaraja, you know Tiruvaiyaru,
the birth place of Saint Thyagaraja.
He
is the greatest among Sahitya Kartas. And
his Pancharatna Kirtanais are considered
among the finest of sahityams. Naattai,
Gaulai, Arabi, Varaali, Sri Ragam are 'ghana
ragas' (heavy ragas). Saint Thyagaraja
composed five songs in praise of Lord Rama.
They are rendered by musicians world over to
this day.
Not only vocalists, but instrumentalists
also render the song of Saint Thyagaraja
whatever may be the origin of the
instrument, East or West — Thayagaraja
kritis are played on them. Pancha Ratna
Kritis find a pride of place in the
repertoire of every musician of repute
today.
Every year Pancha Ratna Kritis are
rendered in Tiruvaiyaru on Thyaga Brahma
Aradhanai Day. Musicians and music lovers
from all over the world converge at
Tiruvaiyaru to render the heavenly music and
drown themselves in divine bliss on this
Day.
It may not be possible for all of us to
go to Tiruvaiyaru. This thought gave birth
to the idea of holding a Tiruvaiyaru
festival in Chennai itself. Lakshman Sruthi
Musicals, Kalalaya USA, Nataka Academy and
Rotary Club Of Madras Mount have united to
organize this event. With the blessing of
the Music Trinity, we wish to hold
'Chennaiyil Tiruvaiyaru', to the great
happiness of musicians and rasikas alike.
'Chennaiyil Tiruvaiyaru' will be part of
the Music Festival to be held in Kamarajar
Arangam, Chennai from 21 to 25 of December,
2007. On the Inaugural Day, December
21, 2007, Pancha Ratna Kritis will be
rendered at 9:00 a.m.
This event provides a forum for
established musicians and young talent to
exhibit their musical talents.
Led by the renowned musician Padmabhushan
P.S. Narayanaswamy, all musicians and music
enthusiasts will sing Pancha Ratna Kritis.
Admission to the inaugural session is
FREE.
The stage will be the replica of the
Thyagaraja Aradhanai Mandapam at
Tiruvaiyaru. It can accommodate about 300
artistes. Besides, arrangements have been
made to distribute printed version of Pancha
Ratna Kritis to the audience, who too can
join in the rendering on the inaugural day.
This five day Music Festival will
commence at 10:00 a.m. and end at 10:00 p.m.
on each day.
