Vairamuthu is a renowned name uttered endearingly by the Tamils living across the globe.

He is a visionary who has wholly internalized the essence and elegance of classical and ancient Tamil language. His poetic and lyrical authority in Tamil earned him a distinct place.

Early Life

The roots of his life are as deep as the roots of his language. Vairamuthu, hails from an agricultural family and was born to Ramasamy Thevar and Angammal on july 13, 1953 in Mettur, a tiny village with merely 60 habitats, in Theni District, the then Madurai District, Tamil Nadu. The poor peasants, cattle, birds and the arid vegetarian were the first wonders of Vairamuthu.

In 1957, a dam was constructed across the River Vaigai and about 14 villages in the reservoir area were evacuated by the government. Vairamuthu, the 5 year old kid, sobbed for the reason unknown to him, walked holding his mother?s finger and migrated to the next village Vadugapatty, having to leave their submerged native land as a refugee in ?free? India.

The second chapter of Vairamuthu?s life continued in Vadugapatty, with continued woe for the loss of his birth place. He lived a twin life of education coupled with agriculture.

Journey towards Tamil

Annadurai, Dr. ?kalaignar? Karunanithi, Bharathi, Bharathidasan, and Kannadasan greatly inspired him.
