P Suseela pays back to music

P Suseela, one of the nightingales of India, wants to return the love and esteem bestowed upon her. This she would accomplish, by honouring the legends of Tamil music industry.

To this end, she has floated P Suseela Trust to promote, propagate, preserve and popularise performing arts. This year the P Susheela Award for Excellence instituted by her Trust will be presented to Dr K J Yesudass for his contribution to music. Also lifetime achievement awards will be presented to T M Soundararajan and P B Sreenivas.

The awards will be given away on 14 November at a grand ceremony to be held at Nehru Indoor Stadium. Renowned singers including Dr Balamurali Krishna will be performing at the event.

Susheela, said, 'it is my way of paying back to music, which has given me this life. I am extremely happy and thrilled that singers like Mano, Hariharan, Jayachandran, Unni Menon, Chitra, Vani Jeyaram, Harish Raghavendra will be performing at the event.

Expressing her views about contemporary film music, she said, 'there are a host of talented singers in Tamil cinema today. They are well-trained and giving their best.'

Queried if she rued the absence of melody in modern music, she said, 'we can't dismiss all the new songs. Even now there are some melodious numbers being created. But the pronunciation of Tamil words by singers leaves a lot to be desired. We cannot blame them. It is the responsibility of the music directors to intervene and make them sing correctly .'

Susheela confessed to being a great fan of T M Soundararajan, who she said,'sang with such ease and gusto and dominated Tamil music for over three decades.'

A beaming Susheela concluded by saying,'I consider myself fortunate to be associated with music. I started singing at the age of five. Today when I look back I feel humbled to have made my mark in music, thanks to excellent composers and my ardent fans.'
