P Suseela, one of the nightingales of India, wants to return the love
and esteem bestowed upon her. This she would accomplish, by honouring
the legends of Tamil music industry.
To this end, she has floated P Suseela Trust to promote, propagate,
preserve and popularise performing arts. This year the P Susheela
Award for Excellence instituted by her Trust will be presented to Dr
K J Yesudass for his contribution to music. Also lifetime achievement
awards will be presented to T M Soundararajan and P B Sreenivas.
The awards will be given away on 14 November at a grand ceremony to be
held at Nehru Indoor Stadium. Renowned singers including Dr Balamurali
Krishna will be performing at the event.
Susheela, said, 'it is my way of paying back to music, which has given
me this life. I am extremely happy and thrilled that singers like
Mano, Hariharan, Jayachandran, Unni Menon, Chitra, Vani Jeyaram,
Harish Raghavendra will be performing at the event.
Expressing her views about contemporary film music, she said, 'there
are a host of talented singers in Tamil cinema today. They are
well-trained and giving their best.'
Queried if she rued the absence of melody in modern music, she said,
'we can't dismiss all the new songs. Even now there are some melodious
numbers being created. But the pronunciation of Tamil words by singers
leaves a lot to be desired. We cannot blame them. It is the
responsibility of the music directors to intervene and make them sing
Susheela confessed to being a great fan of T M Soundararajan, who she
said,'sang with such ease and gusto and dominated Tamil music for over
A beaming Susheela concluded by saying,'I consider myself fortunate to
be associated with music. I started singing at the age of five. Today
when I look back I feel humbled to have made my mark in music, thanks
to excellent composers and my ardent fans.'
