The Association of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India (ABHAI) presented the Natya Kalanidhi Award to Bharathanatyam exponent M K Saroja at the valedictory function of its annual day celebration.
Conferring the award that carried a citation and purse of Rs 25,000 chairperson of Intellectual Property Rights Appellate Board Justice Prabha Sridevan said that Bharathanatyam was India's treasure and it needed to be preserved.
She also urged the Tamilnadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram to popularise classical dance and Carnatic music among the masses .
Music director Deva, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram, said that Bharatanatyam was one art form where the virtues of Guru Bhakthi, patience and respect for people were exhibited alongside the art form.
Padma Subrahmanyam, president, ABHAI, said that there was a need for Bharathanatyam gurus of different schools to come together and work for the preservation of art and heritage.
